Most Australians only see a doctor once something has gone wrong. A preventative health check inverts that: thorough testing while you are well, to find risk early, when it is cheapest and easiest to do anything about. Here is what a proper preventative check involves in Melbourne, what it costs, and where it differs from a standard GP visit.
A bulk-billed GP check usually means a short consult, blood pressure, and a basic panel of roughly 10 to 20 markers. That is a good system for detecting established disease, and it is not designed to do anything else. A preventative check is looking for something different, so it measures different things:
Programs here run from a few hundred dollars to several thousand a year. HodieLabs memberships start at $299 per year for the health platform, $999 for advanced diagnostics with expert consults, and $2,499 for the full program with double diagnostics and a complete expert team. Testing happens at our flagship clinic at 85 Spring Street, Melbourne, inside Stille. Medicare generally won't cover proactive testing without a clinical indication, although some GP-ordered tests attract rebates along the way.
This is where most health checks quietly fail. You get a PDF of numbers, and then nothing happens. The test was the product, and the product is finished. We treat results as the starting point instead: your biomarkers, DNA and wearable data feed a Health Operating System that turns them into daily actions, and then we retest to find out whether any of it worked.
When you're comparing providers, that last part is the question worth asking. Anyone can sell you 100 biomarkers. Far fewer will tell you what changed by the time you test again.
This article is general information, not medical advice. Speak with your GP about what testing is appropriate for you.
A GP check-up is often bulk-billed but limited in scope. Comprehensive preventative programs in Melbourne range from around $299 to $5,000+ per year depending on depth. HodieLabs memberships including 100+ blood biomarkers, DNA testing, DEXA scanning and doctor consults range from $299 to $2,499 per year.
Typically a comprehensive blood panel (cardiovascular, metabolic, hormonal, inflammatory and nutrient markers), body composition scanning, a doctor consultation, and a personalised action plan. Advanced programs add DNA testing and continuous wearable tracking.
Many chronic conditions, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, some cancers, develop silently for years. Early detection of modifiable risk factors gives you the widest window to act. The value depends on acting on the results, which is why programs with follow-up and retesting outperform one-off checks.
No referral is needed for HodieLabs and most private preventative health programs. You can apply directly and testing is arranged for you.
