Cardiovascular disease is still the leading cause of death in Australia, and it is also among the most preventable. Most heart attacks and strokes are the end point of a process that has been building silently for decades. Caught early, that process can be slowed, stopped, and in many cases partly reversed. That is the whole premise of preventative cardiology, and it is what a modern Melbourne Preventative Health and Longevity Clinic is built to deliver.
Atherosclerosis, the plaque build-up behind most heart attacks and strokes, develops across 20 to 40 years before it causes any symptom. For most people the first symptom of heart disease is the event itself. That long silent runway is the failure mode of reactive medicine. It is also the opportunity, because it means there are decades in which to intervene, provided somebody is looking.
Standard cholesterol testing misses a lot. A modern preventative panel goes considerably deeper:
Read together and tracked over time, these early-warning biomarkers describe your cardiovascular risk years or decades before a standard check-up would flag anything at all.
Measured risk is manageable risk. Lowering ApoB through nutrition, exercise and, where it is warranted, medication slows plaque formation. Addressing insulin resistance removes a major accelerant. Managing blood pressure and inflammation protects the arterial wall. None of this needs a diagnosis first, and starting earlier matters more than most people realise, because the benefit compounds. A decade of slightly lower ApoB is worth far more than a year of aggressively lower ApoB at 65.
At our Melbourne Preventative Health & Longevity Clinic, cardiovascular prevention is built into every membership. It starts with a Health Blueprint, a baseline of 40+ biomarkers including the key cardiovascular ones, then a doctor consult to interpret them and build the plan. Higher tiers add advanced screening such as CT coronary calcium scoring, and repeat testing plus wearable tracking shows whether your markers are genuinely improving.
You don't have to wait for a cardiac event to find out your risk. The best time to start was a decade before you thought you needed to, which for most people reading this means now.

Largely, yes. Most heart disease develops silently over decades, so measuring risk early, through markers like ApoB, Lp(a) and a CT calcium score, and managing it through lifestyle and, where appropriate, medication can substantially reduce and delay cardiovascular events.
Key early tests include ApoB, lipoprotein(a), hs-CRP, fasting insulin and HbA1c, and a CT coronary calcium score. These reveal cardiovascular risk years before standard cholesterol testing or symptoms.
HodieLabs is a Melbourne Preventative Health and Longevity Clinic at 85 Spring Street in the CBD, offering comprehensive cardiovascular biomarkers, doctor consultations and advanced screening such as CT calcium scoring.
Most proactive preventative testing is privately funded, as Medicare generally covers diagnostics when there is a clinical indication. Some tests ordered by your GP may attract a rebate.
ApoB counts the atherogenic particles that actually drive arterial plaque. It is often a more accurate predictor of cardiovascular risk than standard LDL cholesterol and can be elevated while ordinary cholesterol looks normal.
