VO₂ max is the maximum amount of oxygen your body can use during intense exercise, measured in millilitres per kilogram per minute (mL/kg/min). It is the single best measure of cardiorespiratory fitness, and one of the strongest known predictors of all-cause mortality and healthspan.
Cardiorespiratory fitness reflects how well your heart, lungs and muscles work together. Higher fitness is consistently associated with lower risk of cardiovascular disease, many cancers and early death. And, importantly, it is modifiable through training.
VO₂ max is interpreted by age and sex; the bands below are a general guide for adults (mL/kg/min) and your report is compared to age- and sex-matched norms:
VO₂ max testing is available as an add-on to any HodieLabs membership, performed at a partner exercise-physiology lab and tracked alongside your biomarkers and wearable data through our Melbourne Preventative Health & Longevity Clinic.

VO₂ max measures the maximum oxygen your body can use during intense exercise (mL/kg/min). It is the best single measure of cardiorespiratory fitness.
Higher cardiorespiratory fitness is strongly associated with lower all-cause mortality and cardiovascular risk, and the benefit continues at higher fitness levels. It is also highly modifiable through training.
It depends on age and sex, so results are compared to matched norms. As a general adult guide, above ~46 mL/kg/min is excellent, while below ~30 is low.
The gold standard is a cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) using a mask during graded exercise. Wearables offer useful estimates between formal tests.
HodieLabs offers VO₂ max testing as an add-on through a partner exercise-physiology lab, tracked alongside your other results at our Melbourne Preventative Health and Longevity Clinic.
