Total Cholesterol/HDL ratio: what your result means.

Updated 07 August 2026 · HodieLabs Clinical Governance Lead · The HodieLabs Evidence-Based Clinical Library

Frequently asked questions

The ratio of total cholesterol to HDL cholesterol. A widely used cardiovascular risk marker, lower ratios indicate a more favourable lipid profile.

The HodieLabs Evidence-Based Clinical Library optimal range is <4.5 ratio, based on ESC-EAS 2019 dyslipidaemia guidelines and Framingham risk data; TC/HDL ratio <4.5 desirable for primary prevention. >5.0 associated with increased cardiovascular risk.

Annual testing is recommended for most adults as part of a comprehensive preventative panel; more often if a result is being actively managed.

Management depends on the underlying cause. Interpretation and an action plan should always involve your doctor.

Total Cholesterol/HDL ratio is measured in the HodieLabs Health Blueprint at our Melbourne Preventative Health and Longevity Clinic at 85 Spring Street, with doctor-led interpretation against evidence-based reference ranges.
