Magnesium is a cofactor in over 300 enzymatic reactions spanning energy production, muscle and nerve function, blood pressure and glucose control. Serum magnesium is the standard blood measure, with the caveat that only ~1% of body magnesium is in blood.
Meta-analyses of prospective studies link higher magnesium levels and intake to lower cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes risk. Because serum levels underestimate tissue deficiency, evidence-based interpretation treats low-normal values with intakes below recommended levels as a signal worth correcting. Magnesium repletion is cheap and low-risk.
