HbA1c (glycated haemoglobin) reflects your average blood glucose over the previous ~three months, measured as the percentage of haemoglobin with glucose attached. It is the cornerstone marker for diagnosing prediabetes and diabetes.
Glucose dysregulation damages vessels years before diabetes is diagnosed. HbA1c catches the drift early: ADA thresholds define 5.7–6.4% as prediabetes, a stage where progression is still highly reversible through diet, exercise and weight change.
Associated risks when out of range: Diabetes risk. Cardiovascular disease. Cognitive decline risk.
The evidence base behind how the HodieLabs Evidence-Based Clinical Library interprets HbA1c, from randomised trials, prospective cohorts and genetic (Mendelian randomisation) studies. Full citations in the reference list below.
The HodieLabs Evidence-Based Clinical Library interprets HbA1c against published clinical authority standards, never arbitrary "optimal" ranges. Measured in %:
Recommended testing frequency: Annual, as part of a comprehensive panel. Single markers are always interpreted in context.
HbA1c is measured in every Health Blueprint at our Melbourne Preventative Health & Longevity Clinic, interpreted by a doctor against the guideline-cited ranges above and tracked over time through your HodieLabs membership.

Average blood sugar over the past 2–3 months; tracks long-term glucose control.
The HodieLabs Evidence-Based Clinical Library optimal range is <5.7 %, based on ADA 2024 Standards of Care in Diabetes; HbA1c <5.7% normal, 5.7–6.4% prediabetes, >=6.5% diabetes.
Annual testing is recommended for most adults as part of a comprehensive preventative panel; more often if a result is being actively managed.
Evidence-supported levers include: improve insulin sensitivity, weight reduction, exercise, reduce refined carbs. Interpretation and an action plan should always involve your doctor.
HbA1c is measured in the HodieLabs Health Blueprint at our Melbourne Preventative Health and Longevity Clinic at 85 Spring Street, with doctor-led interpretation against evidence-based reference ranges.
