Fasting glucose measures blood sugar after an overnight fast, the standard first-line screen for impaired glucose metabolism, prediabetes and diabetes.
Vascular risk does not wait for a diabetes diagnosis: large pooled cohort analyses show risk rising from fasting glucose levels well within the 'normal' range. Combined with HbA1c and fasting insulin, it locates you precisely on the metabolic spectrum, while intervention still works best.
Associated risks when out of range: Insulin resistance, Diabetes. Vascular damage.
The evidence base behind how the HodieLabs Evidence-Based Clinical Library interprets Fasting glucose, from randomised trials, prospective cohorts and genetic (Mendelian randomisation) studies. Full citations in the reference list below.
The HodieLabs Evidence-Based Clinical Library interprets Fasting glucose against published clinical authority standards, never arbitrary "optimal" ranges. Measured in mmol/L:
Recommended testing frequency: Annual, as part of a comprehensive panel. Single markers are always interpreted in context.
Fasting glucose is measured in every Health Blueprint at our Melbourne Preventative Health & Longevity Clinic, interpreted by a doctor against the guideline-cited ranges above and tracked over time through your HodieLabs membership.

Blood sugar level after fasting; a primary marker of glucose control.
The HodieLabs Evidence-Based Clinical Library optimal range is 4.0–5.5 mmol/L, based on ADA 2024 Standards of Care in Diabetes; fasting glucose <5.6 mmol/L normal, 5.6–6.9 mmol/L impaired (prediabetes), >=7.0 mmol/L diabetes.
Annual testing is recommended for most adults as part of a comprehensive preventative panel; more often if a result is being actively managed.
Evidence-supported levers include: reduce glycaemic load, exercise, improve sleep, reduce visceral fat. Interpretation and an action plan should always involve your doctor.
