A liver and muscle enzyme; elevated levels may indicate liver or tissue damage. AST is measured by blood test as part of the Organ panel in the HodieLabs Health Blueprint.
Less liver-specific than ALT, also released from cardiac muscle, skeletal muscle, and red blood cells. AST/ALT ratio (De Ritis ratio) helps distinguish cause: >2 suggests alcohol, <1 suggests NAFLD.
Associated risks when out of range: Elevated in liver damage, muscle injury, cardiac events, and haemolysis, AST > ALT pattern (ratio >2) suggests alcoholic liver disease.
The HodieLabs Evidence-Based Clinical Library classifies AST as an strong evidence-tier biomarker. Its reference ranges come from a published authority standard rather than from observational optimisation targets. The standard used here is Aligned with largest Australian pathology laboratory reference interval; AST 10–35 U/L. Consistent with RCPA guidance (10–40 U/L adjusted to match major Australian lab calibration). Where relevant clinical outcomes are noted on this page, they reflect the guideline literature referenced below.
The HodieLabs Evidence-Based Clinical Library interprets AST against published clinical authority standards, never arbitrary "optimal" ranges. Measured in U/L:
Recommended testing frequency: Annual, as part of a comprehensive panel. Single markers are always interpreted in context.
AST is measured in every Health Blueprint at our Melbourne Preventative Health & Longevity Clinic, interpreted by a doctor against the guideline-cited ranges above and tracked over time through your HodieLabs membership.

The HodieLabs Evidence-Based Clinical Library optimal range is 10–35 U/L, based on Aligned with largest Australian pathology laboratory reference interval; AST 10–35 U/L. Consistent with RCPA guidance (10–40 U/L adjusted to match major Australian lab calibration).
Annual testing is recommended for most adults as part of a comprehensive preventative panel; more often if a result is being actively managed.
Evidence-supported levers include: address alcohol/medication contributors, improve metabolic health. Interpretation and an action plan should always involve your doctor.
