The bathroom scale gives you one number, and that number hides almost everything worth knowing. It cannot separate muscle from fat, it cannot see the fat packed around your organs, and it has nothing to say about whether your bones are getting stronger or thinner. A DEXA body composition scan answers all three, and for metabolic health and longevity those answers matter far more than your weight does.
DEXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) is a quick, low-radiation scan that measures fat mass, lean mass and bone density, and shows how each is distributed around your body. It started life as the gold standard for bone-density assessment and became the reference tool for body composition, because it is far more precise and far more repeatable than scales, tape measures or bioimpedance.
Muscle mass and metabolic health are among the strongest predictors of how well and how long you age. Higher muscle mass goes with better insulin sensitivity, better resilience to illness, fewer falls and fractures later on, and lower risk across a range of chronic conditions. Visceral fat pushes in the opposite direction and drives metabolic disease. A DEXA scan makes both visible and trackable, which means you can work on the things that move healthspan rather than the things that move the scale.
Focusing on weight alone is worse than unhelpful. It can be actively misleading. Someone who loses weight while losing muscle has usually gone backwards. Someone whose weight sits perfectly still while they add muscle and shed visceral fat has changed their health substantially, and their scale will never tell them so. DEXA moves the target from lighter to stronger and leaner.
Annual or twice-yearly is enough for most people to see real change in fat, muscle and bone. The single scan is not where the value sits. Because DEXA is precise and repeatable, the comparison between scans is the point: it tells you whether a training and nutrition plan is genuinely adding muscle and stripping visceral fat, or whether it only feels like it is.

A DEXA scan precisely measures fat mass, lean muscle mass and bone density, including visceral fat around the organs and how each is distributed around the body.
The scales show only total weight. A DEXA scan distinguishes muscle from fat, reveals hidden visceral fat and measures bone density, all far more relevant to metabolic health and longevity than weight alone.
Yes. DEXA uses a very low dose of radiation, far less than a standard X-ray, and the scan takes only a few minutes.
Higher muscle mass is linked to better insulin sensitivity, strength, resilience to illness, and a lower risk of falls, fractures and chronic disease with age, making it one of the most important levers for a long healthspan.
Most people benefit from an annual or twice-yearly DEXA scan to track changes in fat, muscle and bone density over time.
