Your driver's licence says one age. Your body may well say another. Biological age testing estimates how fast you are actually ageing from measurable biology, and it has become one of the most searched topics in preventative health in Australia. It is also one of the most oversold, so it is worth being precise about what these tests can and cannot do.
Chronological age counts years since birth. Biological age estimates the condition of your cells and systems. Two 45-year-olds can come out a decade apart, and that gap tracks disease risk, resilience and healthspan considerably better than the calendar does.
Treat the headline figure as a summary statistic and go straight to what produced it. If inflammation, ApoB or fasting insulin are pushing your score up, those are specific, fixable problems with known interventions. The number itself changes nothing. The markers underneath it are where the work is.
This is the thinking behind the HodieLabs platform: 100+ blood biomarkers, 700,000+ DNA markers and wearable data tracked continuously, translated into daily actions, so you can watch a trajectory bend instead of guessing at it. Members test at our Melbourne clinic and retest on a set cadence, which is the only honest way to find out whether an intervention did anything.
Be sceptical of any provider who sells you a biological age and stops there. A single number with no markers behind it and no retest scheduled is a horoscope with a lab logo on it.
This article is general information, not medical advice. Speak with your GP about what testing is appropriate for you.
The most researched methods are epigenetic clocks, which measure DNA methylation patterns, and biomarker-based models that combine blood markers like inflammation, metabolic and organ-function measures. Each method captures a different aspect of ageing, so results can vary between tests.
They're scientifically grounded but imperfect. Different clocks can give different answers for the same person. The most useful application is tracking your own trend over time with the same test, rather than fixating on a single number.
Studies suggest measurable improvements in biological-age markers from exercise, better sleep, nutrition, and managing blood pressure, lipids and blood sugar. What actually matters is improving the underlying markers, the age score is just a summary.
Several providers offer biological age testing in Australia. HodieLabs members in Melbourne get comprehensive blood biomarker and DNA testing with ageing-related markers tracked over time as part of membership, from $299 per year.
